Selenium for the Hair & Scalp

Hair, Scalp and Selenium By Mandy Trichologist

Selenium is a trace mineral that has great healing properties and can be used for many health conditions. In the clinic we use it for various hair loss and scalp problems, as well as general health conditions that may be affecting the hair or scalp. A main benefit to us is that selenium aids the body to create antioxidant enzymes to protect the cells from free radical damage that can play a part in hair loss and skin/scalp problems.

Scalp problems: Along with other minerals Selenium supports the immune system in the fight against infection, fungal and yeast problems. As Selenium is a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant we find it great for scalp disorders such as dandruff, eczema, psoriasis, scalp acne plus many more.

Hair Loss: Selenium helps convert proteins required for hair growth and is suitable for various types of hair loss. We are aware that free radicals are harmful to cells during hair growth, and that selenium is an antioxidant that can destroy these free radicals. There are various reasons for hair loss, but here is just one example of why we may suggest selenium. For the health of the thyroid gland, because both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can result in hair loss. Selenium is vital for the function of the thyroid gland by aiding conversion of inactive thyroid hormone to active hormones. Do not take if pregnant or breast feeding
